Health Professions Advising

Pre-Health at CofC
Our definition of pre-health is the process a student goes through if they intend to work in a health profession. Pre-health is not a “major” or “track”. The process includes:
- Exploring a variety of health care professions and understanding the type of work (e.g. patient contact, type of facility) involved and how this matches your personal strengths, motivations, and preferences
- Preparing for a selected health profession, this includes both academic (e.g. course planning and major selection) and vocational endeavors (e.g. job shadowing, volunteering, research, leadership, work experience)
- Applying to the professional schools including assessing readiness to apply, selecting schools, preparing for and taking entrance exams, and preparing a compelling application

As a full-time health professions advisor, Karen Eippert is available to all students interested in entering a healthcare field from the time they arrive on campus through graduation. Each student will also be assigned a central advisor and an academic advisor to assist as they choose the right major, register for coursework, participate in shadowing/volunteer experiences, prepare for standardized tests, research various professional schools, and successfully navigate the application process to professional schools.
Hey guys! My name is Vernon Kennedy Jr, and I’m a junior Molecular Biology major from Winnsboro, SC. Following graduation, I plan to pursue a career as a physician-scientist. Outside of being a Pre-Health Mentor, I’m a member of Student Ambassadors, Charleston 40, SCAMP and I sing with with College of Charleston Gospel Choir! I enjoy science (of course!), helping others achieve their goals and creamed corn! I hope to see you soon!
Hello, my name is Haleigh Ferro and I’m a Senior here at the College! I’m a Molecular Biology major with a Spanish minor, and I plan on attendingmedical school to work in Emergency Medicine after graduation. I’m also a Classroom mentor with Charleston Hope, working in a research lab at MUSC, a member of the Pre-Health Honor Society (Alpha Epsilon Delta), and a member of College of Charleston EMS! In my free time I love to do yoga and explore Charleston (especially trying all of the delicious food). I love working with students who are also excited about a future in medicine, and I can’t wait to get to know you guys!
