Allied Health

Allied Health refers to a large, diverse group of health occupations which meet many necessary functions in the health care system. Many of these professions have developed in the last 50-60 years in  response to the rapid advancements in health care technologies. Preparation for careers in Allied Health vary greatly, from certificate programs to clinical doctoral degrees depending on the specific discipline.

The College of Charleston offers prerequisite courses for Allied Health training, but we do NOT offer degrees in Allied Health. Our focus is on preparing students for those Allied Health professions which require a minimum of two to four years (60-122 semester hours) of liberal arts education & ultimately lead to either a Baccalaureate, Master's or Doctoral degree in Allied Health. After completing the required coursework at C of C, you must apply to, and be accepted by, the Allied Health program at the school of your choice before you may enter that program.

Allied Health careers most frequently pursued by College of Charleston students include:
Physical Therapy · Occupational Therapy
Communication Sciences and Disorders (Speech Language Pathology)
Physician Assistant · Anesthesia for Nurses
Cardiovascular Perfusion · Genetic Counseling
Health Administration  Public Health

Many students from the College of Charleston enter the College of Health Professions at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Schools other than MUSC offer similar programs which you may want to investigate. Schools other than MUSC may have slightly different requirements; you are responsible for obtaining information from those schools that interest you. Contact Ms. Karen Eippert, Director of Health Professions Advising and she will be happy to answer your questions and assist you with a plan for success. Nonresidents of South Carolina are urged to investigate public universities in their state of residence because it may enhance their chance of being interviewed and tuition  will frequently be  more affordable. In many cases, CofC students from other states will be given special consideration as "close ties to the community" when applying to programs at MUSC and other clinical programs in SC.
